Press statement by MCA Spokesperson Sdr Gan Ping Sieu condemning the violence by unknown individuals against churches
MCA: Decent Malaysian do not degenerate into lobbing explosives and hacking websites
MCA is deeply outraged and condemns the distasteful and alarming acts of violence perpetrated by unknown attackers to the Metro Tabernacle church Kuala Lumpur , the Church of the Assumption in Petaling Jaya, Life Chapel in Section 17 etc. The intention to cause fire and damage to the Church of the Assumption is particularly abhorred considering that the church borders Assunta Hospital and is located in front of Assunta Primary School and there are residential houses nearby. It was only on last Saturday, 2 January 2009 that our former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah bin Haji Ahmad Badawi had attended the funeral service of his late father-in-law, Sdr Matthew Danker at the Church of the Assumption. Many lives have been endangered. These senseless acts by extremists must be stopped at once.
MCA condemns such acts of extremism which will further inflame tension between Malaysians of diverse faiths and ethnicities. Is there a hidden agenda to fan race-hate between peace-loving Malaysians who are known to extend our neigbourliness and kinship to fellow Malaysians irrespective of faith when in time of need? We believe that our rakyat are peace-loving people.
Peace, stability, and harmony of the nation must be maintained, and can only be maintained with the help of all right-minded rakyat.
Attacking, rampaging and/or confiscating houses of worship only take place in countries where there are civil war conflicts land territorial disputes brought about by generations of hatred steeped in ethnic complexities.
Malaysia is not like this, nor do we desire to descend into chaos. Our forefathers never intended for Malaysians to live in fear of harassment, and MCA therefore emphasizes our call for calm.
The universal value of great religions must be valued and respected. The attackers who are hiding in obscurity are destroying the universal values of goodwill, peace and harmony of great religions.
Judiciary website
Meanwhile, MCA deplores the menacing words that were printed on the judiciary’s website by unknown hackers. The independence and integrity of the judiciary must be upheld and not be intimidated by such threatening sentences while the rule of law must prevail.
We call upon law enforcement agencies to be on the alert and to increase protection of places of worship throughout Malaysia. If any member of the public has knowledge on the attackers, please inform police.
