At a press conference chaired by MCA Deputy President Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek after the Central Committee meeting was convened, announcements were made to fill the vacant leadership posts in the party.
For the MCA Disciplinary Board, YB Datuk Seri Dr Fong Chan Onn, the MCA Member of Parliament for Alor Gajah was appointed as Chairman while the Deputy Chairman is Sdr Chan Tse Yuen. Another member of the Disciplinary Board are Datuk Lim Si Cheng, while two members previously serving in the Disciplinary Board were re-appointed. They are Sdr Lau Chih Siang and Sdr Ivan Chen Kai Hong.
Sdr Simon Lim Seng Chai was appointed to the post of National Organising Secretary while Datuk Tee Siew Kiong has been appointed as the Deputy National Organising Secretary.
Questions fielded during the Q&A touched on the possibility of fresh party polls, to which the MCA Deputy President informed that results from a report submitted by the Fresh Party Elections Action Committee indicated that fresh party elections are not to be held. This is because only 13 Central Committee members have submitted resignation letters which thereby does not fulfil the Party’s Constitution of a minimum two-third or 21 out of 31 elected CC resigning.
To another question on the status of the 13 CC members who handed their resignation letters, the Deputy President explained that the 13 CC members had forwarded undated resignation letters which specifically spelt out that the resignations were valid only if certain conditions were fulfilled i.e. if there are fresh party elections.
Soi Lek reiterated the CC’s stand that “if there are adequate CC members resigning, there will be fresh polls. This is always the stand and is in line with the party Constitution. We cannot force or coerce people to resign. All CC members are politically mature to know what they are doing.”
