It becomes utterly bizarre when ex-convict and PKR Advisor Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim chooses to lambastes the Education Ministry, acting like some righteous guardian and protector of vernacular schools.
Wasn’t it a fact that when the afore-mentioned convicted felon was Minister of Education in 1987, he assigned Malay teachers who couldn't speak Mandarin to hold Deputy Principal positions in Chinese primary schools, much to the uproar of parents and turning a deaf ear to the advice by MCA’s from doing so?
It was only after much persuasion by MCA joined by Chinese education societies and the Thien Hou Temple committee was this issue resolved. However, Anwar’s actions then reveal that he wanted to alter the characteristic of Chinese schools – an action which violates the the Constitution which allows the existence of vernacular schools, and totally violates the spirit of Malaysia’s father of Independence, Tunku Abdul Rahman who was determined to continue Chinese and Tamil primary schools as conditions to the British paving the route for Independence.
Anwar’s reasonings to the Ijok electorate today for instructions 19 years ago is way too simplistic – “the decision to send the Malay teachers was to assist the Chinese principals who had difficulties in their official correspondences in Bahasa Malaysia to the Ministry.” MCA Education Bureau chief and Dewan Negara Senator, YB Lee Sing Chooi took swipe at Anwar for his sweeping reply, explaining that, “for any individual who serves in the government sector, he must have fulfilled the civil service’s requirement of obtaining a minimum of Credit for the SPM Bahasa Malaysia paper.” Senator Lee also took aim at Anwar for not having repented for his instructions then, and merely offering a limpid excuse devoid of reason.
