Register as a voter, every Malaysian
When the shocking figure of nearly 5 million people in this country have not registered as a voter was disclosed recently, the public must be wondering why this group of people do not bother to register as voters. Today, 3 Chinese in Machap could not cast their votes because they did not register as a voter earlier.
Every Malaysian especially the young people should register as a voter when they reached the age of 21. Every citizen in this country should know their right to vote and choose the government as guaranteed in the Federal Constitution. All they have to do is bring along their MyKad and go to any of the post offices in the country and register as a voter.
Everybody regardless of race should come out and fulfill their obligations to vote. Malaysians must decide who should represent them and the constituency in every election because every vote is crucial in determining the people’s representative in the government.
Polling in the by-election for the Machap state seat has been smooth since the polling booths opened at 8 am today. Several polling centres revealed that most of the voters comprised of senior citizens and women.
Now at S.K. Melaka Pindah polling station, the crowd is getting bigger with more people coming out to vote. They are Hutan Perca, Tebong, Kemuning, Machap Baru, Solok Menggong, Melaka Pindah, Machap Umboo and Air Pasir.
People young and old, able and invalid are turning out in full force to fulfill their obligations as a citizen in this country. Credit should also be given to employers who gave time off to their workers to come out and vote.
About 59.2 per cent or 5,616 of the 9,623 voters in the Machap state by-election have cast their votes as at 3pm today. The percentage was expected to continue to rise before the eight polling stations closed at 5pm today. The voter turnout for the constituency in the 2004 general election was 74.33 per cent.
Ballot boxes will be brought from all the polling stations from 6 pm and 7 pm to the Japerun Hall where the votes would be counted and later the winner will be announced at the same venue. The Machap by-election result is expected to be in by 8.30pm today. - MCA Online -
