AN opposition MP yesterday questioned the Malaysian Bar Council's ethics following the government's sponsorship of a dinner it hosted on April 17.
Wee Choo Keong (PKR-Wangsa Maju) said, by accepting the sponsorship, the Bar Council had allowed itself to be used by the government.
"Several days ago, the Bar Council was operating like a political entity when it organised a forum on the social contract.
"The Bar Council has lost its way and lost sight of its objectives," he said during the debate on the Mid-Term Review of the Ninth Malaysia Plan.
Wee also called for the suspension of Appeals Court judge Datuk Low Hop Bing, who had been named in the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the V.K. Lingam video.
"Until today, Datuk Low Hop Bing is still judging cases in court.
"How can a judge be allowed to dispense justice in court when there is a strong allegation against him?"
He added that Low could be reinstated after the royal commission had completed its investigations and no case was raised against him.
Wee said the situation showed how crucial it was for the Bar Council to keep to its traditional role of focussing on judicial and legal issues.
