GEORGE TOWN: Sungai Pinang assemblyman Koid Teng Guan, who ignited controversy after being accused of and admitting to plagiarism, has apologised to the people for his misconduct.
But all has not been resolved for Koid, as he still faces the prospect of stern disciplinary action, either from the state government itself or his party, the DAP.
The party is in the midst of conducting an internal inquiry on the matter which came to light after a former Barisan Nasional assemblyman accused Koid of plagiarism.
Reading from a one-page prepared statement, Koid said: "I want to apologise for the incident where three of my written questions were found to bear similarities with those raised in the previous state legislative assembly session.
"As a responsible DAP member, I admit my mistake and hope the incident will not affect the good name of the state government which adopts the CAT (competency, accountability and transparency) philosophy."
Speaking at the state Legislative Assembly building here yesterday, Deputy Chief Minister Professor Dr P. Ramasamy said the state government in general and DAP in particular would not condone such an act.
He pledged that there would not be a repeat of the incident in future.
"We will take full responsibility and not run away," he said, adding that the state government was transparent and professional in handling the matter.
Former Datuk Keramat assemblyman Ong Thean Lye was reported as saying that he was shocked by the plagiarism of his questions by Koid.
The questions were about:
- the progress of the monorail project, whether its alignment had been identified and when it was supposed to take off;
- when the state government planned to have a NGV pumping station on the island and where it would be located;
- and the amount of money set aside for a sports fund.
Koid yesterday blamed an assistant for the wording of the questions.
