Bung Mokhtar should apologise for hailing Hitler

I am ashamed and appalled that a fellow Malaysian, and a BN Member of Parliament to boot, has blatantly saluted Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler while celebrating the victory of Germany’s football team over Brazil in the World Cup semi-finals by tweeting “Well done…Bravo…Long live Hitler”.

From insulting women to disabled people, Kinabatangan MP Datuk Bung Mokhtar is no stranger to controversy, but now his zero common sense in attributing Germany’s win to Hitler will make Malaysia the centre of a negative attention once again. I am sure that even the Germans will be insulted to know that their triumph was being equated to the dictator who sparked a worldwide war, causing the genocidal death of millions.

It is bad enough that Malaysia has become (in)famous after some of our citizens were reported to have become militants by joining the terror group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL); we do not need to be known as a country which supports neo-Nazism and its warped belief of genetic superiority of the Aryan race, and annihilation of ethnicities deemed inferior.

Being surrounded by many different cultures and beliefs is normal especially in the Land Below the Wind which has many indigenous groups; hence tolerance and mutual respect comes easily to Sabahans Yet, such tolerance should not be pushed to the limit.

Moreover, the FIFA World Cup is an apolitical, colourful, sporting event bringing players, talents and fans together. Politics, and definitely not distorted racist ideology must never be allowed to creep in.

Thus, I urge Bung Mokhtar to apologise and retract his tweet, and to think hard and deep before opening his mouth lest his foot gets stuck in it again.
