MCA President Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek today received a courtesy call from the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Malaysia, H.E Chai Xi at MCA Headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.
Soi Lek explained that Malaysia always believes that the country should strive to build and maintain diplomatic and cordial relationships with other countries seeing that Malaysia is a country which greatly depends on trade.
China, being one the rising industrial kingmakers in the world is one country which Malaysia conducts a lot of trade with. Soi Lek proudly announced in a press conference held after the meeting that trade with China had gone up by as much as 82% in the first five months of this year as compared to the same period in the previous year, thus increasing the amount generated to USD19.2 billion (RM60 billion).
The President also told the press that he was confident that trade with the Peopl’es Republic of China will continue to grow due to the ASEAN-China Free Trade Area which reduces tariff rates for a majority of import products to zero. The ASEAN-China Free Trade Area came into effect on 1 January 2010 and involves the 10 ASEAN countries and the People’s Republic of China.
Expressing hope that trade between the two countries will continue to grow, Soi Lek also added that this year Malaysia will try to promote several industry clusters such as tourism and medical tourism to China, adding that those industrial fields have great growth potential.
Currently trade between Malaysia and China includes exporting rubber, palm oil, electrical and electronic goods, liquefied natural gas and chemical products to China while Malaysia imports capital goods, and consumption goods e.g. food from China.
Regarding medical tourism, Soi Lek said that “When talking about medical tourism, we should talk about a total package, meaning treatment and recuperation.” He went on to explain that Malaysia has a nice relaxing atmosphere such as good weather conditions, beautiful sea sides and a relaxing natural environment whereas there are certain places in China where the weather could be very harsh on the people there. As such, Soi Lek added that the promotion of medical tourism was something that could be discussed with China.
The courtesy call by the Chinese ambassador also signifies the recognition given by China to MCA as one of the strong links in the bonds between Malaysia and China. All in all the courtesy call was a friendly visit with many important topics discussed.
