Defending Chinese education is everyone’s responsibility; Dong Zong should not cause frictions

Dong Zong is relentless in holding on to this entire debacle over the alleged deal made between MCA and the Federal Government in 1996. I urge them to stop disputing such matters and instead, focus on the betterment of Chinese education.

We MCA, are not enemies of Dong Zong. I urge them to halt attacking us with slanderous accusations. We are a political party representing the interests of the Malaysian Chinese and all Malaysians. Therefore we will never succumb to any agreement that will threaten the welfare of the Chinese community. Who in the right mind will shoot himself in the foot?

I understand that news reported that MCA had struck a deal with the federal government in 1996, agreeing to maintain the status quo on Chinese independent schools as a trade-off for the removal of Section 21(2) of the 1961 Education Act when amendments were made to the Act that year. (Section 21(2) of the 1961 Act stipulated that the Minister of Education “may at any suitable time convert all national-type primary schools to national primary schools”) I reiterate that no such agreement has taken place.

The current state of our Chinese education is clear evidence that the deal was never struck in the first place. Due to MCA’s contributions, MCA has achieved tremendous success in upholding Chinese education including UEC holders may now enrol into teacher training colleges, apply for PTPTN loan, allocation of more lands for more Chinese primary schools and etc.

So I ask Dong Zong again, is Dong Zong really willing to believe in such ambiguous and hearsay evidence? Are they so ignorant to ignore the truth right in front of their eyes that no such contract had been made?

It is an undisputable fact that MCA had never neglected Chinese primary schools and Chinese Independent schools. Hence Dong Zong should not be so quick to discredit MCA because it is everyone’s duty to preserve Chinese education.

It is not worth it for Dong Zong to fuss over this letter and cause a severe deterioration in ties with MCA. It will do more harm than good to choke on this matter.
