Imposing conditions on federal government shows Guan Eng insincere & using the poor as pawns for low cost housing

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng is using the plight of poor Penangites to gain funds from the federal government by claiming that his administration will provide the land for low-cost housing for the Rumah Hijau, Mak Mandin residents only if the federal government provides the funds for this project (Malaysian Insider, 19 June 2012).

The shocking fact is that if Guan Eng can insinuate that land is easily available for his administration to take, then why did he wait so long to fulfill his promise of affordable housing in Penang? Is this a tactic by DAP and Guan Eng whereby the people’s welfare is pawned and used to hold the federal government to ransom?

No sincerity in constructing low-cost housing

Since 2008, the DAP state government has overlooked the people’s welfare in favour of implementing mega-projects such as the controversial sPICE project and the Penang-Butterworth undersea tunnel. The fact that the DAP state government had not built any low cost housing from 2008 to 2010 despite having 152,702 low-cost housing applicants as pointed out in the Auditor General’s Report 2010 proves the Rocket’s insincerity.

While millions are spent on mega projects, affordable housing remains an unreachable dream for Penangites. Therefore, if Guan Eng was really genuine, he should then provide more land as well as funds for more low-cost housing projects instead of demanding them from the federal government

Small cash aids to cover up failures and scandals

Instead Guan Eng chooses to focus and to play up small contributions to society such as the RM100 cash aid for the elderly and newborns in Penang in order to distract attention away from his failures, while blaming the previous state government for anything that goes wrong in order to appear as the good guy in the eyes of the public.

While there is no room (pun unintended) for the destitute awaiting the security of a low-cost housing roof over their heads, the DAP-led state government allows Penang hills to be brazenly stripped for the development of posh condominiums and luxury houses.
