Press statement by MCA Penang secretary Sdr Lau Chiek Tuan
Imposing gag orders on state representatives is akin to sidelining the people’s views
I urge Penang DAP to not persecute and oppress their party representatives who do not fall in line with their leader’s stand by imposing gag orders or taking disciplinary action against them as such acts are akin to dictatorship. As a state assemblyman, Teh Yee Cheu has a responsibility towards his constituents in Tanjung Bungah. Thus it is only right for him to continue raising the issue of hill slope development.
This shows that even within DAP, a few of its members are aware that their party’s leadership does not really care for the people but are only after their own personal goals, and that there is a severe lack of ‘democracy’ within a party which claims to stand for democracy.
What Teh Yee Cheu is doing constitutes a check-and-balance system which will prevent the Penang state government from taking advantage of the people, and any attempts to gag him now will destroy that system. What use do the people have for an assemblyman who is unable to voice out their interests?
It is sad that the other so-called representatives of the people have decided to keep quiet over the over-development of Penang as they are too afraid to invoke the wrath of their party leaders. Obviously DAP’s authoritarian style of leadership has rendered them ineffective to serve as the people’s representative.
Thus once more I urge DAP and other opposition parties to stop being arrogant and to humble themselves and to learn to accept criticism and realize that they can no longer ride the wave of popularity which brought them victory during the 12th General Election. DAP must now realize that they must be held accountable for their actions.
