Kind gesture melts hearts
TWO couples unable to afford their babies’ heart operations can now heave a sigh of relief as three benevolent benefactors have stepped in to settle the bills amounting to more than RM207,000.
The cost of the operations carried out at the Gleneagles Medical Centre in Jalan Pangkor was borne by the Penang MCA Hospital Visitors Board, Yayasan Nanyang Press and China Press.
Technician Chin Eng Chong, 38, was so grateful for the RM64,300 settlement of his infant son James’ medical bills that he could barely express himself.
He gave a simple “Thank you” to the group’s representatives.
His wife Hong Mei Ling, 36, a senior clerk, said their son was now in stable condition but doctors would continue to monitor his condition.
“We did not expect him to pull through as he had acute pulmonary hypertension after the second operation.
“He’s a fighter,” she said during a press conference at the Penang MCA Public Services and Complaints Bureau in Pahang Road yesterday.
Also present was engineer Chong Kwok Yuen, 36, who thanked the donors for paying the RM143,637.90 incurred for his daughter Rui Xin’s surgery and treatment.
“My wife and I did not think that we could come up with this amount of money in such a short time.
“My daughter is now in Penang Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. She still needs the ventilator to breathe,” he said.
Rui Xin is nearly three months old.
Penang MCA Public Services and Complaints Bureau deputy chief Lim Thoon Deong said the parents would still need to bring their babies to the hospital for follow-up treatment and medication.
Penang MCA deputy chairman Datuk Dr Loh Hock Hun and Komtar Barisan Nasional coordinator Loh Chye Teik were also at the press conference.
