MCA HQ, 21 Feb 12 – This year marks the 40th anniversary of the People’s Volunteer Corps (Ikatan Relawan Rakyat Malaysia), or better known by its acronym RELA since its formation on 11 January 1972.
As MCA encourages more non-Bumiputera to join the security forces, what better way to start and learn the ropes than through becoming a RELA volunteer?
A ceremony was held this morning at the MCA Headquarters on the occasion of the establishment of the MCA RELA Platoon which saw multiracial Malaysians in addition to several MCA HQ staff receiving their pins, stripes and scrolls upon completion of an introductory course held in April last year.
In his speech, MCA Central Committee member Dato’ Lee Chee Leong who is also the Deputy Home Minister gave a brief history on the formation of RELA which is a continuation of the Home Guard formed during the Emergency era.
Today, RELA continues to assist government agencies in providing security, peace and harmony of the people and nation.
“The establishment of RELA provides an opportunity to the masses to come forward and become members of a government agency which was formed to assist in looking after and defending the security and peace of the nation,” relayed Chee Leong.
“When previously, RELA’s membership stood at 556,000, RELA’s current membership exceeds 3 million,” revealed Chee Leong adding that the government will draft various programmes so that RELA’s physical presence maybe felt by the general public.
In addition, RELA has launched the slogan, “1 Platun, 1 Kampung, 1 Taman” to enable overall participation by all Malaysian citizens. Moreover, this campaign is aimed at supporting the NKRA on crime reduction.
The Deputy Home Minister also informed that RELA has formed a Briged RELA orang asli, Skuad Musa RELA and RELASIS whereby membership is open to all multiracial Malaysians, teenagers and graduates, thereby indicating the spirit of volunteerism and service to society is prevalent in all layers of society.
In line with 1Malaysia, the Home Ministry has targeted that 40% of RELA’s membership consist of non-Bumiputeras to balance the racial composition of RELA. Presently, 30% of RELA’s 3 million members are Chinese and Indians, with the balance being Bumiputeras. MCA Kuala Lumpur has established 3 new platoons comprising 99 members.
