Press Statement by MCA Youth National Deputy Chairman Dato’ Dr Mah Hang Soon
Nizar should respect our armed forces for their service & sacrifice, not politicize them for his own interests
It is disappointing that the opposition will do anything and everything they can in order to create anger and mistrust among the public towards the Barisan Nasional government at the expense of innocent parties. This time, their victims are the members of our country’s armed forces in the form of accusations hurled by Dato’ Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin of PAS.
The former Perak Menteri Besar had insinuated that there was a meeting between Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Najib Tun Razak with senior military officers to discuss the outcome of the coming 13th General Elections. Such allegations, which have been vehemently denied by the military, are liable to create panic among the streets and mistrust towards our armed forces, thus destroying the harmony and peacefulness of our country. Do we want to see our country go the way of Egypt, Libya and Syria where civilians and soldiers battle each other continuously leading to many lives lost?
Coming at a time when we in the BN government are trying to encourage youths, especially non-Malays, to apply for not only the civil service but the armed forces as well, such wild allegations will dampen our efforts. How are we to have a more racially balanced military or civil service if Pakatan constantly impedes our efforts?
Malaysian armed forces personnel sacrificed their lives in service to Malaysia
Our military has an excellent track record, dating back to World War 2, through the Emergency period and the Confrontation in the 1960s and 70s, to the recent operation against the militant group Al-Maunah in 2000 which took place right here in Perak at Bukit Jenalik. Has Nizar forgotten about this incident where our armed forces had lost 2 of their own in defence of our country?
Participated in United Nations peacekeeping missions
Our armed forces is also recognized internationally having been selected to participate by the United Nations for peacekeeping missions around the world e.g. Lebanon, Cambodia, Congo and Bosnia. As such, they should be accorded much respect, and not simply accused or made use of so that Pakatan Rakyat can gain politically at the military’s expense.
Lastly, our armed forces are beholden to the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong and nation, and not to any political party. To accuse them of anything otherwise is to disrespect their sacrifice and contributions to our country’s defence and sovereignty. Thus I urge Nizar to apologise as soon as possible for his accusations so as to acknowledge the good name and honour of our armed forces.
