The Malacca Government will seek a meeting with Bukit Aman in an attempt to resolve the jurisdiction issue for crime cases reported in Tampin, as part of the town spans two states.

State Education Youth and Sports committee chairman Datuk Gan Tian Loo said Tampin town is under the jurisdiction of both Malacca and the neighbouring state of Negri Sembilan.

He said the Negri Sembilan side of the town was governed by the Tampin District Council, while the Malacca side was administered by the Alor Gajah District Council.

However, Gan said in crime cases, confusion often occurs if it is reported right at the heart of the town, where police contingents are divided between Tampin police headquarters and Pulau Sebang police station.

“Many find their distress calls being diverted to either one of the contingents especially since the main commercial area is situated right on the border between the two states.

“This is where confusion arises causing a delay in the arrival of police officers attending emergency cases,” he said in an interview.

Hence, he said the state government is hoping that Bukit Aman could clarify the situation.

Gan was earlier asked to comment on a police report lodged in Seremban police headquarters by a 41-year-old businessman alleging that he was given the run around when he attempted to call the emergency line.

The businessman Suresh Rao from Taman Seremban in Seremban claimed he witnessed a 16-year-old girl being violently assaulted by a man. He said the 999 call was diverted to Pulau Sebang police station where he was told to call Tampin police headquarters.

However, the Tampin police officer said the onus was on Pulau Sebang to handle the case.

Suresh said even after a few calls, police failed to arrive.

“I was forced to flag down some passers-by who helped to rescue the girl.

“Later, I decided to lodge a police report so that the authorities would look into the issue of overlapping jurisdiction,” he added
