Tee Yong: Pakatan pulling in different directions

On July 29, 2012, in In The News

Pakatan Rakyat leaders should harmonise their stand on hudud and the implementation of the Islamic law to avoid confusing the people, said MCA Young Professionals Bureau chief Datuk Chua Tee Yong.

He said that despite the long debate on the issue, only DAP national chairman Karpal Singh had strongly opposed the law.

“This has confused the people because DAP and PAS are not in the same direction.

“But Opposition leaders are willing to put this issue aside for their political interest and to get more seats in the general election.

“Therefore, we know their cooperation is merely for their own common goal,” added Chua, who is Deputy Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister.

Karpal was reported to have asked PAS leaders not to raise the Islamic state issue any more as it could derail Pakatan’s plan to capture Putrajaya.

Chua said that unlike in the Barisan Nasional, the Pakatan parties did not practise respect for one another and did not have a strong foundation in nation-building.

He added, however, that while DAP and PAS were not in tune with each other on the hudud issue, they appeared to cooperate well in by-elections and the people should be aware of the Opposition’s tricks.
