Wee questions Karpal’s motive
Why get into bed with Pas when you know that you are poles apart on the issue of hudud?
That is the question Wangsa Maju MP Wee Choo Keong would like DAP chairman Karpal Singh to answer.
“Karpal is being childish. He is going on and on and asking the various party leaders to ‘make a stand’.
“Though Pas has always been consistent about their stand on the issue, we all know that it is unlikely, if not impossible, to do it with the kind of numbers they have in Parliament.
“So, why is he harping on it? I don’t know why he’s having all these emotional outbursts,” said Wee, a former DAP member who later formed the Malaysian Democratic Party, contested the general election on a Parti Keadilan Nasional ticket.
He questioned the rationale behind Karpal demanding that opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim make a stand on the issue.
“All the statements are totally unnecessary and should be ironed out at Pakatan Rakyat meetings. And it shouldn’t come up again when another by-election draws near.”
Wee was responding to Karpal’s recent threat that DAP would leave the Pakatan Rakyat coalition should Pas implement hudud.
“Nobody is indispensable,” he said, adding that it was improper of Karpal to hold the party to ransom like this.
He also pointed out Karpal’s inconsistency over the years, with regards to DAP’s prickly relationship with Pas.
“In the mid-90s, he said hudud will only take place “over his dead body”.
“But in 99, he was sharing a pillow with Pas and assuring people that hudud would not be a problem and that the country would not be an Islamic state.
“Why didn’t he question them then?
“It is Barisan Nasional who should be harping on the issue, not a Pakatan Rakyat component,” he said.
