Why does the Kedah govt permit environment carnage which detriments everyone?
While the 2008 Kedah Sejatera Nikmat Semua manifesto by Kedah PAS fails to mention anything on environment protection, this exclusion is not a carte blanche for the PAS-led government to go on a forest-desecration rampage.
Kedah Mentri Besar Incorporated has admitted that the Ladang Sejahtera project in Baling’s Gunung Inas Forest Reserve was among several factors which contributed to the rivers’ murky waters. This admission comes too-little-too-late as the discharge and siltation from forest clearing contradict PAS promise of “environmental preservation by ensuring all physical developments are environment and people friendly.” How can polluting rivers and soil erosion be considered “people friendly”? Logging activities plaque up to 5,000 hectares of the Gunung Inas Forest Reserve which is slated to be stripped for a cloned rubber trees project for the Ladang Sejahtera.
Prevent climate change
Simultaneously, the Kedah state administration must be reminded of the 2008 PAS manifesto in general which pledged “to protect the rain catchment’s areas, the preserved jungles.” The authorities must pay heed to the advice by the General Manager of Perbadanan Bekalan Air Pulau Pinang Jaseni Maidinsa who had spoken about the “importance of gazetting the water catchment and stopping logging activities. If logging activities continue and the Ulu Muda catchment area in Kedah is not gazetted, then it affects the water source.”
Should the Ulu Muda catchment area record lower rainfall owing to climate change due to unrestrained deforestation threatening the ecosystem, the water supply to Penang will be affected as well. Reduction in water supply may compel state water bodies to spike prices in an effort to decrease water usage among consumers. Industrial and heathcare activities and develoment projects would inevitably suffer.
DAP & PKR reps must approach PAS to act to protect the environment
Why have the sole DAP state assemblyman and 3 PKR Excos failed in PAS-dominated Kedah to urge the authorities to act against excessive logging? Turning a blind eye to profit chasers with scant regard for the survival of endangered fauna as well as upsetting the eco-system shows that Pakatan allies are not the bit least bothered about the environmental damage, climate change and foreseeable consequences on northern Malaysia.
