Women Turn Up In Large Numbers In Run-up To By-election
MALACCA: Although the women in Machap Umboo New Village are well-known for preparing authentic Hakka dishes, they will never give up any opportunity to learn new cooking skills.
A cooking class organised in conjunction with the by-election on Saturday, saw a large group of women turning up at the village community hall to learn how to prepare shao bao (pie with minced meat fillings) and how to make a cake by the steaming method by chef Lim Moy Ling from here.
In opening the function, Wanita MCA chief Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen urged the women to vote for the Barisan Nasional candidate Lai Meng Chong.
“Only the Barisan can protect our future,” said Dr Ng, who is the Deputy Finance Minister.

She said that women’s role in society had been much recognised under the Barisan government.
Dr Ng also sang a few evergreen Mandarin and Hokkein songs with the voters.
In a separate function, Dr Ng said Wanita MCA would conduct a house-to-house campaign for Lai, adding that several activities including line dancing and cooking classes for women in Machap Baru and Machap Umboo would also be carried out.
She said that national leaders would work together with local Wanita members to visit voters daily.
She said the wing had set up a by-election working committee to go to the ground.
“We want to deliver the right messages to voters so that they will not be misled by the Opposition,” she said.
